Sultanpur Viral Video: A wheelchair distribution program organized by Sultanpur’s Department of Disability Welfare has triggered controversy.
What Caused The Backlash Behind Sultanpur Viral Video?
In a video, a person can be seen standing up and walking after posing a series of photographs in a foldable wheelchair.
The incident took place on Saturday at the Lambhua block premises.
This prompted questions about the authenticity and implementation of the scheme.
Following the video’s circulation, officials remarked that the wheelchair was not meant for the man seen sitting on it in the video.
District Backward Class Welfare Officer Mudit Srivastava remarked the wheelchair had been sanctioned for Sandeep, an individual with disabilities from Bankepur village, who could not attend the program due to illness. Therefore, the wheelchair was symbolically handed over to his father, Ram Dhani, who later took it home and gave it to his disabled son.
Officials said a total of 16 tricycles, 8 wheelchairs, 4 crutches, 1 hearing aid and 1 walking stick were distributed during the event.
Beneficiaries also received certificates under the marriage grant scheme.
MLA Sitaram Verma rejected the allegations by some local residents and attendees who believed the program was not adequately publicized in advance. Verma added that misleading information was being spread on social media about the wheelchair recipient.
