Sunil Thapa Death: Veteran actor Sunil Thapa, known for his strong performances in Nepali and Indian cinema, passed away on Saturday in Kathmandu. He was 68. The actor, who appeared in Priyanka Chopra starrer Mary Kom and Manoj Bajpayee‘s popular web series The Family Man, died at Norvic Hospital after being brought in an unresponsive state.

Hospital officials said doctors conducted an electrocardiogram and later declared him dead, citing a suspected cardiac arrest. The news of Sunil Thapa’s death has left the film industry in shock, with actors, filmmakers and political leaders mourning the loss of a respected performer.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang paid tribute to the late actor on Facebook. Remembering his contribution to Nepali cinema, he wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Sunil Thapa, whose powerful performances (especially as Rate Kaila) left an indelible mark on Nepali cinema. His talent and legacy will continue to inspire generations of artists.”

Priyanka Chopra Pays Emotional Tribute After Sunil Thapa’s Death

One of the most heartfelt tributes came from Priyanka Chopra, who shared an emotional note on Instagram. Recalling her time with Thapa during Mary Kom, she spoke about how he supported her during a deeply painful phase of her life, following the death of her father, Ashok Chopra.

She wrote, “You will always be my Coach, Sir. You kept me together when I had just lost my dad. You loved me and helped me through many tough days without even realising it. Your warm hugs and your laugh will always be part of my memories.”

Priyanka added, “Gone too young but never forgotten. Thank you for your kindness at a time when I was broken. Rest in peace, Sunil Thapa. My condolences and prayers are with the family and loved ones.”

Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who worked with Thapa on The Family Man, also mourned his death. He wrote on Instagram Stories, “It’s so sad. God bless your soul sir. My 3rd season TFM memories will live forever becasue of you.”

Sunil Thapa Death: His Career In Film Industry

Sunil Thapa enjoyed a long and diverse career that crossed regional and national boundaries. He worked extensively in Nepali cinema and later appeared in Bollywood and Bhojpuri films. One of his most iconic roles was Rate Kaila in the Nepali film Chino, which remains one of his most celebrated performances.

Indian audiences came to know him through impactful supporting roles, especially in mainstream films and streaming shows. In the 2014 biographical sports drama Mary Kom, Thapa played M Narjit Singh, the strict yet caring boxing coach who trains the protagonist (Priyanka Chopra). His performance was widely praised and earned him a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

He later won appreciation for his role as David Khuzou in The Family Man Season 3. Playing a respected local leader and Chief of the Naga Mother’s Association, Thapa played a key part in the storyline around “Project Sahakar,” a peace initiative set in Northeast India.
