The Kerala Story 2: High Court Orders Stay Just 2 Days Before Release, Vipul Amrutlal Shah Considers THIS To Avoid Financial Loss

The Kerala Story 2 stalled by Kerala High Court stay just before release. What triggered the order and what’s next for the makers? Read to know!

The much-awaited release of The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has run into legal trouble at the last moment. Just two days before its theatrical debut, the film was put on hold by the Kerala High Court.

On February 26, 2026, the court issued an interim stay on the movie’s release. The decision came only a day before the film was scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide on February 27. Naturally, the sudden development sparked strong reactions across the industry and online platforms.

The stay followed several petitions challenging the certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Petitioners argued that the film deals with sensitive themes and therefore required deeper review.

The Kerala Story 2 Release Faces Court Intervention

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas presided over the case and raised questions about the CBFC’s approval. The court observed what it described as a possible “non-application of mind” while granting the U/A certificate.

While recognising the importance of creative freedom, the judge expressed concern about the film’s potential impact. The court reportedly noted that portraying an entire state through controversial subject matter could send a “wrong indication”.

The High Court also reviewed whether certification guidelines were properly followed. In particular, it questioned why an Adult (A) certificate was not considered, given the themes shown in the trailer.

As a result, the court directed the CBFC to re-examine both the film and its certification. The board has been given two weeks to consider the objections and make a fresh decision. For now, the stay will remain in place for 15 days or until the CBFC completes its review.

Makers Respond As Financial Concerns Rise

The producers (led by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Sunshine Pictures) defended the film in court. Their legal team described the petitions as “premature and misconceived”. They maintained that the movie does not target any specific community. Instead, they argued that it presents a fictionalised story aimed at a pan-India audience.

Despite these arguments, the court chose to continue the stay. It also instructed the filmmakers not to transfer or release distribution rights during this period. Meanwhile, the unexpected delay has raised concerns within the trade. Film releases involve heavy investments in promotions, theatre bookings and overseas planning. Any pause can result in significant financial strain.

Sources close to the team suggest that Vipul Amrutlal Shah is now considering legal remedies to limit potential losses. Reports indicate that the makers may approach a higher bench of the Kerala High Court or move the Supreme Court of India for urgent relief.

About The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond

Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, the sequel broadens its narrative beyond Kerala. Unlike the first instalment, the new film explores interconnected stories set across multiple states.

The plot follows three Hindu women:

  • Surekha Nair, an IAS aspirant from Kerala
  • Neha Sant, a javelin thrower from Madhya Pradesh
  • Divya Paliwal, a dancer from Rajasthan

Their journeys revolve around relationships, personal struggles and identity challenges. The film introduces a fresh lead cast featuring Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha. With a runtime of 131 minutes, the movie had already generated strong buzz ahead of release.
