Almost three years after the release of The Kerala Story, the makers have unveiled its follow-up, The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond. The announcement has instantly revived debate, with conversations centring on the film’s subject, its tagline “Inspired by many true events,” and the broader intent behind the project.
The discussion intensified when filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared his unfiltered opinion. Kashyap was recently in Kochi to attend the Filmfare Awards. Reporters caught up with him at the airport, where he addressed the controversy surrounding the sequel.
Anurag Kashyap Slams The Kerala Story 2
Anurag Kashyap said, “The Kerala Story is bullsh*t propaganda.” Kashyap also commented on a scene from the trailer of The Kerala Story 2. Referring to the much-discussed beef sequence, he questioned its authenticity and added, “Aisa beef kaun khilata hai? Aisa koi khichdi bhi nahi khilata hai (Who feeds someone beef like this? No one is fed even khichdi in this manner).”
He then criticised what he believes is the true intention behind the film. Kashyap said, “They just want to make money and please everybody; divide people. The filmmaker is a greedy man. He just wants to make money.”

Vipul Amrutlal Shah Responds To Title Debate
Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah responded to questions about the film’s title. Many viewers had wondered why the sequel retains the Kerala Story name despite reportedly expanding beyond the state’s setting.
Speaking to ANI, Shah said the sequel is not limited to Kerala. He explained that the film expands its scope to explore what he described as a wider issue across India. He added that the title was chosen because the core theme remains consistent with the first film.
Shah also commented on the film’s reception. He noted that the project has not faced any threats so far. According to him, presenting what he believes to be the truth may reduce the likelihood of backlash, as people could respond negatively to attempts at intimidation.
What The Kerala Story 2 Explores
Unlike its predecessor, The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond reportedly shifts its focus to young women from various parts of India. It stars Ulka Gupta, Aishwarya Ojha and Aditi Bhatia as leads. The story explores their personal relationships while engaging with themes of alleged religious conversion and societal pressures.
Early promotional material suggests that the film aims to examine emotional vulnerability, identity conflicts, and social influence. However, critics argue that the “Inspired by many true events” tagline once again raises questions about interpretation and credibility.
The Kerala Story 2 will release in theatres worldwide on February 27.
