Adil Hussain has once again opened up about his discomfort with appearing in the 2019 blockbuster Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani. While the film was a huge box office success, it also sparked controversy for glorifying toxic masculinity and misogyny.

Adil Hussain Makes Latest Confession On Being Part Of Kabir Singh

In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Hussain explained why he regrets taking the role. He said, “I was travelling extensively with Mukti Bhawan then and didn’t have the time to go through the full script or watch the original Telugu version.”

He even tried to avoid the project by asking his manager to quote five times his usual fee, hoping the producers would refuse. He revealed, “But they agreed.”

Hussain finally agreed after reading one scene he found “brilliantly written.” But when he saw the finished film, his reaction changed. He added, “I found it misogynistic. When I saw the film, I thought – What have I done? It’s not about what Sandeep Reddy Vanga has done. It’s my responsibility. I could have said no. Several women friends expressed disappointment. It was important for me to say I regret doing that film.”

When Sandeep Reddy Vanga Humiliated Him For Criticising The Film

The actor’s comments brought back a past clash with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. After Hussain’s earlier remarks in 2019, Vanga had hit back on social media, writing, “Ur ‘belief’ in 30 art films didn’t get as much fame to u as ur ‘regret’ of 1 BLOCKBUSTER film did… I regret casting u, knowing that ur greed is bigger than ur passion. NOW I’ll save u from the shame by replacing ur face with AI help. Now smile properly.”

With over forty years in the industry and acclaimed roles in films like Mukti Bhawan (2016) and Life of Pi (2012), Hussain counts Kabir Singh as one of the few projects he wishes he could undo.

Why Is Kabir Singh Heavily Criticised?

Well, the criticism of Kabir Singh goes beyond Hussain’s regret. The film depicts Kabir Singh (a brilliant but volatile surgeon, as aggressive, obsessive and abusive) yet these traits are shown as signs of passion and love.

Critics said the film romanticises controlling behaviour and fails to hold the protagonist accountable. This portrayal sparked wider debates about how films influence society’s views on relationships and gender, making Kabir Singh as controversial as it was commercially successful.
