When Satish Kaushik revealed he worked in a textile mill to survive in Mumbai: ‘I was new to Bombay’

Satish Kaushik, who died of a heart attack in Delhi in March at the age of 66, was remembered on his birth anniversary on April 13. The late actor, screenwriter, and director had discussed working in a textile mill when he first arrived in Mumbai in an old interview. In August 1979, Satish had also shared a picture of himself from a railway station, reminiscing about coming to Mumbai to become an actor.

Although Satish was from Haryana originally, he attended college in Delhi and graduated from the National School of Drama in the capital. Satish had started his career as an assistant to filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, and he recalled struggling to find roles in Mumbai in the 1980s because most heroes at the time did comedy, action, and everything else.

Satish had revealed in an interview to Reddiff “In Bombay (Mumbai), I wasn’t getting any roles at all. Those days when I started, that is in the eighties, most heroes did comedy, action, everything. We didn’t stand a chance. Also, I was new to Bombay. To survive I did a job in a textile mills. I joined Nadira Babbar’s Ekjut and acted in some plays. So I would work in the mill in the mornings and go to the theatre in the evenings. Still, the roles weren’t coming,”

He further added, “Finally, I decided I should become an assistant. Because I couldn’t sit idle, you know. I have to something or the other all the time. I am very restless person. He had finished filming his role as politician Jagjivan Ram in Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency.
