The Duffer Brothers, who became household names with Stranger Things, are returning to Netflix with a very different kind of horror. There are no monsters or supernatural creatures this time. Instead, Matt and Ross Duffer are turning a wedding into something deeply unsettling. Their new miniseries, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, is already drawing attention for its eerie tone and unsettling premise.
Netflix has shared the FIRST look at the show and confirmed that it will premiere on March 26. Even the title sets an uneasy mood. The visuals make it clear that this is not a happy love story. From the start, the series feels like a slow and quiet countdown to disaster, with the creators offering no clear hints about what actually goes wrong.
The story centres on Rachel and Nicky, a couple preparing to get married. Camila Morrone, known for Daisy Jones and the Six, plays Rachel, while Adam DiMarco from Overcompensating stars as Nicky. Ahead of their wedding, the couple travels to meet Nicky’s wealthy family. What should be a warm family visit quickly turns uncomfortable and strange.
DON'T MISS
Nicky’s mother (Victoria Cunningham) is played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. She is surrounded by a group of unsettling relatives, portrayed by Ted Levine, Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, Gus Birney and Sawyer Fraser. Their behaviour feels polite on the surface, but something seems off. As the wedding day gets closer, the tension keeps building and the sense of dread becomes impossible to ignore.
Why Stranger Things Creators Are Keeping The Horror A Secret?
One of the most intriguing parts of the series is what it refuses to explain. The Duffer Brothers and the show’s creators have stayed silent about the meaning of the title and the exact nature of the danger. Viewers are left guessing whether the story involves a dark family secret, a cult, or something more psychological.
This choice feels intentional. After years of fast-paced, creature-driven horror in Stranger Things, the Duffers appear to be exploring a slower and more intimate kind of fear. A wedding, usually seen as a joyful milestone, becomes the perfect setting for tension and uncertainty. That contrast gives the series a fresh and disturbing edge.
What Else Are Duffer Brothers Doing At Netflix?
Although Stranger Things has ended, the Duffer Brothers are still closely tied to Netflix. They are expanding that universe with Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an animated series set between the second and third seasons of the original show. Familiar characters will return, along with new voices from Odessa A’zion, Janeane Garofalo, and Lou Diamond Phillips.
The brothers are also producing The Boroughs, a science fiction series set in a retirement community. The show features a strong cast, including Bill Pullman, Geena Davis, Clarke Peters, Alfre Woodard and Alfred Molina.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is written and showrun by Haley Z. Boston, known for Brand New Cherry Flavor, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Hunters. It is directed by Axelle Carolyn and Lisa Brühlmann, both praised for their work in atmospheric horror.
