Prasoon Joshi has been appointed as the new Chairman of Prasar Bharati, marking a major leadership change at India’s public broadcasting network. The announcement immediately triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with many users questioning the selection and debating alternative names for the top post.
The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed the appointment on Saturday. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the decision, saying it would bring “renewed energy” and “a fresh creative voice” to the organisation. The post had been vacant for five months after the sudden resignation of former chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal in December 2025, who stepped down after serving for around 20 months.

The vacancy at Prasar Bharati had remained under discussion within official circles since Sehgal’s exit. According to official details, his resignation was accepted under Section 7(6) of the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990.
Prasoon Joshi, known for his work in advertising, poetry and cinema, is set to assume charge on Monday. He currently serves as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), a position he has held since August 2017. His long-standing experience in creative communication has often placed him at the centre of India’s cultural and media space.
