The 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup was recently won by India, who defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final in Navi Mumbai. This massive victory has reportedly revived hopes for Anushka Sharma starrer long-delayed project Chakda Xpress, which has been on hold for years due to creative issues.
Anushka Sharma has been away from the big screen for more than seven years. She was last seen in Zero (2018) alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. The actress completed shooting Chakda Xpress in 2022, but the film never saw a release. Now, following India’s historic World Cup win, reports suggest the makers are eager to bring the film to audiences.
Anushka Sharma Starrer Chakda Xpress To Be Revived After India’s Big Win
According to a Mid-Day report, the makers of Chakda Xpress have written to top Netflix executives, urging them to release the film. A source told the outlet. “We have personally written to top executives at Netflix India to see if they can rise above the conflict so that the film can see the light of day. A biopic on a legend like Jhulan di deserves to reach the audience.”
The report adds that the film has been in limbo because Netflix officials were unhappy with how it turned out. Another insider revealed, “The production house went over-budget. What added to the woes was that the platform heads didn’t like the way the project was shaping up. But it’s still a solid film.”
Currently, the streaming rights for Chakda Xpress remain with Netflix. Another source said, “The recent victory has put the attention back on the biopic. Internal discussions at the streamer have started, and the team is expected to take a final pass this month to determine if it can be released after additional work.”
About The Shelved Biopic
For those unaware, Chakda Xpress is a biopic based on the life of Indian cricket legend Jhulan Goswami. The film is directed by Prosit Roy and produced by Anushka’s banner, Clean Slate Filmz. It aims to showcase Jhulan’s journey from a small-town girl to one of the world’s fastest bowlers in women’s cricket.
On the personal front, Anushka Sharma, who is married to cricketer Virat Kohli, has been living in London since 2024. The couple moved abroad for a quieter life away from the spotlight, but frequently travels to India for work commitments.
If Chakda Xpress finally gets a release, it will mark Anushka Sharma’s much-awaited return to acting.
