Women’s Day 2023: Seven films that have female power written all over them

Women’s Day 2023: Indian women have immensely contributed in all walks of life and Cinema is no exception. From Mother India to Gangubai Kathiawadi, we have seen women power taking the world by storm in the least expected circumstances. No one was ready in 1957 when Nargis shouldered Mother India. In 2022, when veterans like Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar struggled at the box office, it was Alia Bhatt who brought the business back in theatres with Gangubai Kathiawadi. The narrative has changed over the years with more and more actress picking up challenging roles, ditching flower pot roles headlined by established male-counterparts.

Aside from Alia Bhatt, Vidya Balan, Kriti Sanon, Yami Gautam, Shefali Shah and Janhvi Kapoor are among others who have rolled up their sleeves to tell more women-centric stories. Today, we are listing seven films from the year 2022 which will resonate a chord with every women.

1. Darlings

The dark comedy featured Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah in leading roles. Featuring as a doting mother-daughter duo, who survive love and abuse at the hands of their respective spouses. 

2. A Thursday

The film features Yami Gautam as a play school teachers who takes 16 of her students hostage. Her demands later send shockwaves across the country. 

3. Dhaakad 

Kangana Ranaut starred as agent Agni who is placed with an International Task Force. During her mission, she unravels a human trafficking ring controlled by a coal mafia. 

4. Shabaash Mithu 

The film tanked at box office, but found its audience on the OTT platform Netflix. The fast-paced film explores the life of Women’s Cricket Team Captain Mithali Raj. The film starred Taapse as Mithali. 

5. Jalsa

Starring Vidya Balan, Jalsa is an engaging tale of frangibility and susceptibility of human conduct. The film also stars Shefali Shah in a key role. 

6. Gangubai Kathiawadi

Gangubai Kathiawadi featured Alia Bhatt as Gangubai Kothewali. After being duped and sold to a brothel, a young woman writes her own story and ruled the world which was once stranger to her.

7. Mili

A story of will power and resilience, the film stars Janhvi Kapoor in the leading role. Mili follows the story of a young girl with dreams and hopes who gets locked in a freezer no way out. Her pursuit of happiness is bigger than all the hurdles as she survives in the most unprecedented circumstances.
