Watermelon suddenly became a topic of fear across Mumbai after a shocking incident involving the Dokadia family left many people worried about eating the popular summer fruit. Social media was flooded with rumours, videos and panic messages claiming watermelon itself had become dangerous. As fear spread rapidly, fruit sellers reportedly saw a sharp drop in sales across several markets in the city.
The panic began after four members of a Mumbai family died within hours of eating watermelon at their home in the Pydhonie area on April 25, 2026. Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their daughters Ayesha and Zainab reportedly consumed the fruit around 1 AM after returning from a family dinner. Soon after, all four developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea and were rushed to JJ Hospital. Tragically, they could not be saved.

Initially, many suspected food poisoning or chemical ripening agents. However, forensic reports released later confirmed that the deaths were actually caused by zinc phosphide, a highly toxic rat poison. The chemical was reportedly found in both the victims’ internal organs and the watermelon they had consumed.
Watermelon Panic Sparks Clarification From AIIMS Doctor
Amid the growing fear, AIIMS doctor Priyanka Sehrawat addressed the issue in an Instagram video and urged people not to spread misinformation. She explained that sensational rumours spread faster than genuine health information.
According to the doctor, watermelon remains a healthy and nutritious fruit when sourced properly and consumed safely. She stressed that people should rely on verified facts instead of panic-driven social media claims.
Dr Sehrawat also pointed out that watermelon contains high water content and offers several nutritional benefits. She advised people to remain cautious about food hygiene and sourcing, but not to completely stop eating the fruit because of one criminal contamination case.
Her statement has reassured many social media users who were worried after the incident.
