Bananas are one of the most commonly eaten fruits, loved for their natural sweetness and creamy texture. But not all yellow bananas are safe to eat. According to Mumbai-based doctor Manan Vora, many bananas in the market are chemically ripened bananas, artificially turned yellow to look ripe. These fruits may appear tempting, but they can pose hidden health risks if consumed regularly.
Sharing an Instagram video, Dr Vora explained that naturally ripened bananas never look perfectly uniform yellow. They usually have small brown spots and a rich, sweet aroma. In contrast, chemically ripened bananas are often forced to turn yellow quickly using chemicals like calcium carbide. While the outer colour changes instantly, the inside may remain under-matured, tasteless and with poor texture.
How to Identify Chemically Ripened Bananas
Dr Vora suggests a simple visual check to avoid buying chemically treated fruits:
- Look at the top and bottom of the banana. If these parts are green and only the middle is yellow, the banana is likely chemically ripened.
- Naturally ripened bananas have a slightly uneven yellow tone, small brown spots and a creamy texture.
- Check for aroma. Naturally ripened bananas emit a sweet, fragrant smell, while chemically ripened ones often lack fragrance.
Using chemicals like calcium carbide not only speeds up ripening but may introduce toxic elements such as arsenic and phosphorus. Consuming these fruits frequently can lead to digestive issues like bloating, acidity, and discomfort.
Why Choosing Natural Ripeness Matters
According to Dr Vora, choosing naturally ripened bananas is important for both taste and health. Here’s why:
- Naturally ripened bananas are flavorful, creamy and sweet.
- They are safer for regular consumption, reducing the risk of digestive problems.
- They support your body’s natural digestion process without adding chemical stress.
Dr Vora advises people to be mindful when buying bananas from markets or vendors who want instant ripeness. He says, “Opt for bananas that are slightly spotted and naturally creamy inside. This is not just about taste. It’s about protecting your health from hidden toxins.”
By paying attention to colour, texture and aroma, you can avoid chemically ripened bananas and enjoy the full benefits of naturally ripened fruit.
