Covid-19 update: India’s tally crosses 5.7 million mark

India reported a surge of 86,508 new cases in last 24-hour which took nation’s total tally passed 57 lakh mark. 1,129 deaths were reported, taking total fatalities to 91,149. The country now has 9,66382 active cases while 46,74,988 people have been discharged.

Here’re some more updates related to the pandemic today:

  • India has reported over two million cases in the month of September. After breaching 90,000 mark for quite a few days, the country has recorded a marginalised drop in the cases for the fourth consecutive day.
  • India, on Wednesday, launched a special programme to strengthen the process of clinical trials research for neighbouring countries .“The idea is to strengthen the development of vaccines and associated competencies/technologies for the diseases of epidemic potential in India under a mission mode,” an official said.
  • Due to continuous surge in covid-19 cases, Maharashtra government has continued ban on dine-in service in restaurant. The state government had allowed restaurants to open on June 1, but only for deliveries and takeaway.
  • Manipur on Wednesday recorded its youngest death due to coronavirus as a five-year-old child died in Kangpokpi district.
  • Minister of State for Health, Ashwinin Choubey, on Wednesday informed parliament that only 10 states in the country have contributed to 75 per cent of the active covid-19 cases.
  • Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, who had tested positive for the covid-19 on September 14, was hospitalized on Wednesday. He was in home isolation but experienced some unrest yesterday and was subsequently rushed to hospital.
  • In the wake of pandemic, Bengal govt extends period of austerity measures till March 2021.
  • BCCI informed that it will not renew the annual contracts of 11 coaches at its premier National Cricket Academy, including five retired India players —Ramesh Powar, SS Das, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Subroto Banerjee and Sujith Somsundar. This is the biggest lay-off by the BCCI after the pandemic hit the country.

The Johns Hopkins University stated that overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 31.7 million, while the fatalities have rose to more than 975,000.

As of Thursday morning, total number of cases have reached 31,787,190 and the total deaths reported are 975,038, the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) said in its fresh update.
