Covid: India reports 2.63 lakh cases, 4,329 deaths

India’s COVID-19 death toll climbed to 2,78,719 with a record 4,329 more people dying due to the deadly coronavirus infection in the last 24-hour. In the same time, the country also saw a single day rise of 2.63 lakh, the lowest in 28 days, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

The country reported 2,63,533 new cases in preceding 24-hour, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 2,52,28,996, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The active cases further reduced to 33,53,765  comprising 13.29 per cent of the total infections. Meanwhile, the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 85.60  per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 2,15,96,512, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.10 per cent, the data stated.

The Health Ministry said that a total of 18,44,53,149 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 15,10,418 who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 31,82,92,881 samples have been tested up to May 17 for Covid-19. Of these 18,69,223 samples were tested on Monday.

*Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday directed the Medical and Health Department to set up 48 oxygen generation plants in government hospitals to produce 324 tonnes of oxygen required for Covid patients in the state.

*The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday provided 100 oxygen concentrators to Punjab.

*Walk-in vaccination for those aged 45 and above kicked off at 97 Delhi Government-run schools on Monday. Those without any smartphones or unable to register online for vaccination will also be able to get jabbed at these centres.

* For the first time, six cases of mucormycosis or black fungus were detected in Covid patients in Goa on Monday, a senior health official said.

Meanwhile, the overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 163.3 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3.38 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
