Covid update: India reports over 4 lakh cases in new daily high

With 4,12,262 fresh cases and 3,980 deaths in last 24 hours, India on Thursday recorded maximum fresh cases and fatalities in a day, another grim milestone, taking the total caseload in the country to 2,10,77,410, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

India had become the first country in the world to register over 4 lakh infections in a single day on April 30, when it reported 4.08 lakh infections. The new infections have pushed India’s caseload to over 2.06 crore while active cases stand at 35.66 lakh.

India is second only to the United States in the total number of cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic.

*Former Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) Chief Ajit Singh died of Covid on Thursday morning. He was 82. Singh was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gurugram after he tested positive for coronavirus.

*Sri Lanka on Thursday announced that all arrivals from India will be banned with immediate effect due to the record rise in COVID-19 cases in the neighbouring country.

*With no respite in the surge of new coronavirus infections, the Kerala government has announced a lockdown in the state from May 8 to May 16. Kerala registered almost 42,000 cases in the last 24 hours, setting new records. 

*Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi will hold a meeting via video conference with the party’s Lok Sabha MPs tomorrow, to discuss the current COVID19 situation in the country
