Diabetes affects millions of people in India, yet the daily steps needed to manage it often feel confusing or overwhelming. Many people want easy guidance they can follow without checking charts or memorising long lists. That’s why a simple reminder or a small lifestyle hack can make a big difference.

A week ago, on World Diabetes Day, Dr Mounica from Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre shared a short video that quickly caught attention. Her tips were clear, practical and designed for everyday life. She reminded viewers that “managing diabetes is a daily commitment and you’re not alone.” She then listed small habits that can help keep blood sugar stable.

Simple Tips To Control Diabetes

Avoid Sugar

Dr Mounica said one of the easiest habits is avoiding sugar at home and office spaces. Many people grab tea, coffee or snacks during work hours, and that can quickly add up. Research published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that reducing added sugar helps improve overall glucose control and lowers the risk of sudden spikes.

Use a Second Plate or a Small Plate

She also advised using a small plate or a second plate during meals. This is a popular weight-management method supported by the NHS, which explains that smaller dishes naturally help control portion sizes. Smaller portions mean fewer calories and fewer sudden blood sugar highs.

Prioritise Protein

She explained, “Protein is important for everyone.” For vegetarians, she recommended paneer, tofu and soya. For non-vegetarians, protein can come from chicken and fish.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), protein helps control hunger, prevents overeating and slows down glucose absorption, which helps keep levels steady.

Choose Carbohydrates With Fibre

Dr Mounica highlighted the importance of carbohydrates paired with fibre. Fibre slows down digestion and prevents sugar from entering the bloodstream too fast. WHO research shows that people who eat high-fibre diets have more stable glucose levels and a reduced risk of long-term complications.

Avoid Spicy Food And Use Less Oil

She also advised people to use less oil. Excess oil, especially saturated fat, can affect insulin sensitivity.
She added that avoiding spicy food helps some patients, especially those with acidity or digestive issues that can get worse due to diabetes.

Eat Fruits Like Apple, Pear And Guava

Finally, she recommended fruits such as apples, pears and guavas. These fruits are rich in fibre, low in glycaemic load, and help maintain steady glucose levels. The ADA lists these fruits as diabetes-friendly choices.

In simple words, diabetes care does not always need complicated plans. A few daily habits can help you stay in control.
