Fake Paneer: Paneer, which is a staple food in a majority of Indian kitchens, is increasingly being faked using all types of chemical-laced shortcuts. Recently, a video has started circulating that shows that paneer was created using thermocol.

In the past, there have been several instances of adulterated paneer that can cause inflammation and disrupt gut microbiota.

A recent report in The Times of India disclosed that 83 percent out of 83 tested paneer samples failed to meet quality standards while 40 percent were deemed unsafe for consumption because of the presence of unidentified substances and harmful chemicals.

Health Hazards of Consuming Fake Paneer

The consumption of adulterated paneer can lead to severe health complications such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramps or even chronic gut inflammation in acute cases. Over time, the intake of fake paneer can even disrupt nutrient absorption while weakening digestive efficiency.

Eating fake paneer triggers immediate digestive chaos. Stomach pain, bloating, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea strike within hours, mimicking food poisoning. Allergic reactions cause rashes, itching, or swelling, especially from chemical residues like detergents.

What Makes Paneer “Fake”?

It mimics real curdled milk solids but uses cheap substitutes. Manufacturers mix skimmed milk powder with industrial acids, hydrogenated oils (vanaspati), or non-dairy starches to cut costs and boost volume. Detergents and synthetic whiteners create a fresh look, while urea or caustic soda mimics milk proteins. Microbial contaminants like E. coli thrive due to poor hygiene, turning this “budget” option into a health hazard
