Hair oil for oily scalp: If you have an oily scalp, chances are you’ve been told to avoid hair oil completely. It sounds logical – why add more oil to something that already feels greasy? But what if this common belief is actually making your scalp worse? A recent expert insight is now challenging this widely followed haircare rule.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel Healthy Hamesha, Delhi-based doctor Saleem Zaidi addressed this exact concern. He explained why skipping hair oil for oily scalp might not be the solution people think it is.

Hair Oil For Oily Scalp: Doctor Busts The Biggest Myth

According to Dr Zaidi, avoiding oil just because your scalp feels greasy is a major myth. He shared that many of his patients say, “Doctor, my hair is already oily, so if I apply oil, it will become even greasier.” However, he clarified that this belief is not correct.

He explained that an oily scalp does not mean it doesn’t need nourishment. In fact, excess oil production can sometimes be a sign that the scalp is dehydrated or out of balance. When the scalp lacks proper hydration, it may produce more sebum (natural oil) to compensate.

This is where hair oil for oily scalp comes into play. Using the right type of oil can help restore balance and reduce excess oil production over time.

Dr Zaidi recommends:

  • Use lightweight oils like coconut oil, jojoba oil or argan oil
  • Take only one teaspoon of oil
  • Massage gently for about 5 minutes
  • Wash it off after 30–40 minutes with a mild shampoo

He also advised against leaving oil overnight unnecessarily, as it is not required for oily scalps.

Why Skipping It Can Backfire

The idea of not oiling at all may seem safe, but it can actually worsen the problem. When the scalp feels dry or imbalanced, it tends to produce more oil, making hair appear greasier than before.

As per the American Academy of Dermatology, maintaining scalp balance is key to healthy hair. Over-cleansing or avoiding proper nourishment can disrupt this balance and trigger excess oil production.

Using hair oil for oily scalp in the right way can:

  • Help control excess sebum production
  • Nourish hair roots effectively
  • Improve overall scalp health
  • Reduce dryness and irritation

Experts also suggest avoiding harsh shampoos and over-washing, as these habits can strip natural oils and force the scalp to produce even more oil.

An oily scalp does not mean no oil. In fact, the right approach can help fix the root cause rather than just the symptoms. A simple, short oiling routine may be all you need to bring your scalp back to balance.

So, instead of skipping oil completely, it might be time to rethink your haircare routine and follow what actually works.
