Hairfall: Can Your Headphone Use Make You Bald? Top Nutritionist Weighs In

Hairfall: Headphones, particularly over-the-head designs, could exert significant pressure on specific areas of the scalp, generally along the sides or the crown region. If worn for extended periods, especially if they are poorly cushioned or tight, they can create localized stress on hair roots causing traction-related hair loss.

Hairfall: Today, hair loss is one of the most common concerns across all age groups and genders. Among one of the most common fears about hairfall is that prolonged use of headphones could cause hairfall or even baldness. Let us explore if the use of headphone is associated with hairfall or baldness.

Hairfall-More Than Skin Deep

Several studies in the past have demonstrated that hair growth is a highly complex biological process. It is influenced by several factors such as hormones, stress, nutrition, genetics and overall health. Disruption in hair cycles – growth (anagen), transition (catagen) and shedding (telogen) could result in excessive shedding or thinning.

Can Headphones Really Cause Hair Fall?

Headphones, particularly over-the-head designs, could exert significant pressure on specific areas of the scalp, generally along the sides or the crown region. If worn for extended periods, especially if they are poorly cushioned or tight, they can create localized stress on hair roots causing traction-related hair loss. This is simply because repeated tension in the same area could weaken follicles over a period of time. However, for most people, occasional or moderate headphone use is unlikely to cause permanent damage.

However, you should avoid the following situations:

  • Wearing tight or heavy headphones for many hours every day.
  • Using headphones on fragile or wet hair.
  • Poor scalp hygiene, where sweat and friction lead to irritation or inflammation.

Moreover, you should focus on consuming high-quality protein sources such as eggs, dairy, legumes and lean meats. Also, you should include iron-rich foods like spinach, lentils and seeds along with a rich variety of fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables for antioxidants and micronutrients.

All in all, headphones are an easy suspect in the modern lifestyle, but they are rarely the true cause of significant hair loss. At most, they can contribute to minor, localized stress if used excessively or improperly.
