India covid cases spike with 13,742 cases in last 24-hour

New Delhi: After showing significant decline in daily covid-19 cases on Tuesday, India on Wednesday reported major surge once again. The country has reported 13,742 cases in last 24-hour, taking the total tally to 1,10,30,176, the Ministry of Family and Health Welfare said in its latest update. The death toll also surged above 100 as the country reported 104 deaths on Wednesday, taking the total tally to 1,56,567.

The rise in daily number of cases on Wednesday in 3,158 more than Tuesdays. India has managed to keep its daily count below 15,000 for the past few months, while the death toll has also remained below 200.

While some have feared an emergence of the second wave of the novel virus in the country, researchers have credited “mutations and new strains” as the root cause of spike in cases at Covid detection across the country.

In 2021, Indi has reported its lowest daily on February 9 when the country logged in just 9,110 new cases. Last year, the lowest 9,633 cases were recorded on June 3.

As per the data provided by the ministry, there are 1,46,907 active cases at present after 14,037 patients were discharged in a day.

Till now, 1,07,26,702 persons have been discharged so far. The recovery rate has remained to 97.24 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.42 per cent.

On Tuesday, 8,05,844 samples were tested for the deadly virus. The cumulative tests done by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) so far stands at 21,30,36,275.

At least 84 per cent of the new cases are from six states — Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Karnataka and Gujarat.

Six states account for 84.62 per cent of the new deaths including Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.

More than 1,21,65,598 doses of corona vaccine have been administered in the country since the drive began on January 16 after approval for ‘Covishield’ and ‘Covaxin’.

*The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Indian drug regulator will meet today to take up an application by pharma giant Dr Reddy’s Laboratories seeking emergency approval for Sputnik V, the Russia-developed coronavirus vaccine. 

*Arunachal Pradesh did not report any fresh COVID-19 case in the last five days, a senior health department official said here on Wednesday.

*The Central government – which will begin the second phase of vaccination in mid-March – will give priority to people aged sixty and above and those who have comorbidities for longer duration, Dr Suneeta Garg, an advisor to Indian Council For Medical Research (ICMR), told NDTV.  

*Schools in Telangana reopened today for classes six to eight after 10 months of being shut due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

*The number of coronavirus-related fatalities in Romania reached 20,013 on Tuesday after a further 119 patients died in the past 24 hours, the latest official data showed.

*Canada’s cumulative Covid-19 cases surpassed 850,000 as of Tuesday noon, with the total hitting 851,231, including 21,747 deaths, according to CTV.

Meanwhile, the total number of global Covid-19 cases has topped 112 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.48 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
