Mental health: June is a significant month as it marks Men’s Health Awareness Month – a crucial initiative highlighting the necessity for men to maintain their health and wellbeing through regular medical check-ups. Alarming trends indicate that men often neglect routine medical screenings due to various reasons, from fear of negative diagnosis to the illusion of invulnerability, as stated by Dr. Marvin Narcelles from Mercy Health.
Recognising and Combating Top Health Risks in Men
Understanding common health issues in men is vital to encourage proactive health management. Heart disease, with its widespread prevalence, affects one in three men, particularly striking the African American population. Factors such as sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet, and high-stress levels could potentially trigger cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Narcelles emphasised that men below 45 are also at risk of developing hypertension which can escalate to life-threatening conditions like heart attack or stroke if left unchecked.
Precautionary Measures Against Skin and Colon Cancer
Skin cancer poses a significant threat to men, with fatality rates being comparatively higher than women. This makes early detection and treatment imperative. Regular self-examinations for abnormal moles or lesions, especially for those with a family history of skin cancer, are strongly advised. Using broad-spectrum sunscreen and wearing sun-protective clothing outdoors are recommended precautions.
Another noteworthy health risk for men is colon cancer, particularly for those over 50 years old. Despite being a significant health concern, its treatment is relatively manageable if diagnosed early. Therefore, routine colon cancer screenings should be prioritised.

Regular Screenings for Prostate Cancer and the Importance of Mental Health
Men above the age of 45 should also ensure regular screenings for prostate cancer, a condition affecting one in every eight men. Some men might not exhibit any noticeable symptoms, underscoring the critical need for regular check-ups.
Furthermore, mental health disorders, often overlooked in men due to societal norms and stigmas, should be addressed openly. Conditions like anxiety and depression are commonplace and require serious attention. Men are encouraged to consult with primary care providers or mental health professionals if they encounter any issues affecting their daily lives or relationships.
Men’s Health Awareness Month serves as a potent reminder for men to stay informed about their potential health risks and to maintain regular communication with healthcare providers for appropriate check-ups and screenings. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to health matters. After all, prevention is the best cure.
