Mexico develops its own COVID-19 vaccine ‘Motherland’ after two years of efforts, details

COVID-19: More than two years after the introduction of vaccinations from the United States, Europe, and China, Mexican officials cheered the news on Wednesday that their nation had finally created its own COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine, known as “Patria” or “Motherland,” was created in collaboration between the government and a Mexican corporation, Avimex, which had previously worked on animal vaccinations. It was unclear what use the vaccine would be put to.

Mexico purchased 9 million doses of it in September 2022

In March 2020, Mexico began working on the Patria vaccine. However, because testing was sluggish, the nation ultimately imported 225 million doses of vaccines, mostly from Pfizer and Astra-Zeneca as well as some from China. Even though the Cuban-produced Abdala vaccine was intended for coronavirus variants that circulated in 2020 or 2021 rather than the current variations, Mexico purchased 9 million doses of it in September 2022. Few Mexicans have turned out to receive their booster shots for Cuba. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico has made a point of working to make his country self-sufficient in a number of sectors while also lending any assistance he can to Cuba.

The official death toll for COVID-19 in Mexico is currently at almost 334000

In spite of the fact that Mexico still has millions of doses of the Abdala vaccine it purchased from Cuba, vaccination uptake in that country sharply declined in late 2022 and 2023. The new vaccination will be approved for use as a booster shot, according to Mara Elena Alvarez-Buylla, chairwoman of Mexico’s government commission for science and technology. She did not specify whether the Patria vaccination had been legally approved by the government’s medical approval body. Although testing was sparse in the early stages of the pandemic, and the government’s own review of death certificates shows more than 505,000 deaths where COVID-19 was listed as a contributing cause of death, the official death toll for COVID-19 in Mexico is currently at almost 334,000. Dr. Fidel Alejandro Sánchez, a member of the research committee in charge of monitoring virus variants in Mexico, expressed scepticism regarding the use of a booster vaccination created two years prior to defend against strains that are currently in circulation. Sánchez remarked, ‘It’s like reading yesterday’s newspaper. When it wasn’t intended for that, it makes no sense to use it as a booster.’
