Most of us think vaccinations are only for children. But that’s not true. Adults also need vaccines to stay healthy and prevent serious diseases. Skipping important shots can put you at risk of infections that are not just uncomfortable but potentially life-threatening. Knowing which vaccines are essential for adults can save your life.

AIIMS doctor Priyanka Sehrawat recently shared an informative video on Instagram about adult immunisation. She explained the five vaccinations every adult should be aware of. According to her, following the recommended schedule is key to protecting yourself and your family.

5 Vaccinations For Adults

The first vaccine she highlighted is the cervical cancer vaccine. Most people know it is recommended for girls between 9 and 26 years of age. If you have no HPV-related changes in your cervix, you can still get the vaccine. There are two or three types available, and a gynaecologist can guide you to choose the right one. Pap smear tests help ensure you meet the criteria before vaccination.

Next is the tetanus vaccine, often given during pregnancy as part of maternal care. Some adults also get the DPT booster, which protects against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus. This vaccination is crucial for pregnant women to prevent serious infections in themselves and their babies.

The third vaccine is the annual influenza shot. Flu viruses change every year, so adults need this vaccine annually. Many people skip it, but it helps prevent severe flu infections that can lead to hospitalisation.

Fourth is the shingles vaccine. Shingles happens when the chickenpox virus reactivates later in life, causing a painful rash along a nerve path. It can lead to chronic nerve pain that is very hard to treat. Adults with weakened immunity, chronic kidney disease, or long-term steroid use are at higher risk even before 50 years of age.

Finally, the pneumococcal vaccine protects against bacterial pneumonia, the leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia in India. It is especially important for people above 65, but adults with weakened immunity may start as early as 50 years old. This shot can prevent severe lung infections and related complications.
