Festivities Across India Today (September 5)

Thiruvonam (Onam 2025)

Onam is the grand harvest festival of Kerala and the most-awaited celebration for Malayalis across the world. The ten-day festival ends with Thiruvonam, which falls on September 5 this year. It marks the return of King Mahabali, remembered as a symbol of equality and prosperity.

People celebrate Onam with colorful “Pookalam” (floral rangoli), traditional dances, and family gatherings. The highlight is the “Onam Sadya,” a traditional feast with over 26 dishes served on banana leaves. Snake boat races (Vallamkali), the playful Pulikali (tiger dance), and cultural shows add energy to the festivities.

Onam is not just about myth and tradition but also about togetherness and gratitude for nature’s bounty.

Eid ul Milad Un Nabi

Eid ul Milad Un Nabi (also called Mawlid) is observed on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. In 2025, it coincides with September 5, making the day extra special.

Muslim communities across India gather for prayers, spiritual talks, and processions. Cities like Hyderabad, Lucknow, Srinagar, Mumbai, and Bhopal see vibrant celebrations with green decorations, Islamic calligraphy, and lights. Families share dishes like Sheer Kurma and Sevaiyan, while charity and acts of kindness are central to the day. The celebration reflects the Prophet’s values of peace, compassion, and unity.

Teachers’ Day

September 5 is also Teachers’ Day, celebrated to honour the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President and a respected philosopher. Schools and colleges across the country organise events to show gratitude to teachers.

Students express their respect through performances, speeches, and fun activities. In many schools, senior students even take on the role of teachers for a day. Teachers are remembered as guides who shape the future by instilling discipline, knowledge, and values.
