The year 2023 sees Sawan commencing from the 4th of July, stretching till the 31st of August. The extended period of 59 days is a unique feature of this year’s Sawan, providing devotees with a more prolonged spiritual journey. Instead of the typical four, this year will witness an auspicious tally of eight Sawan Mondays, known as Somwars, adding to the heightened enthusiasm and anticipation.

Sawan 2023 is exceptional, marked by an extraordinary occurrence – an extended celebration spanning 59 days. The Adhik Maas or Mal Maas, according to Hindu astrological calculations, has caused this year’s Sawan to last longer. This remarkable phenomenon is resurfacing after a hiatus of 19 years, making it a genuinely distinctive and noteworthy celebration.

Rituals and Observances: The Revered Kanwar Yatra and Sawan Somwar Vrats

The Sawan celebrations incorporate observing Sawan Somwar vrats dedicated to Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati and the pivotal Kanwar Yatra. In this traditional ritual, Lord Shiva’s devout followers embark on arduous journeys, carrying water from sacred rivers in small pots called Kanwars. The devotees, dressed in saffron attire, journey on foot to holy sites linked to Lord Shiva, epitomising their unwavering faith and dedication.

This year’s Shravan month will commence on July 4 and conclude on August 31, with significant dates including eight Mondays for the Somwar Vrats and the beginning and end of the Adhik Maas.
