The month of Sawan this year covers 59 days, including 8 auspicious Mondays, which start on July 4th and run until August 31st. During this period, pilgrims go to temples devoted to Lord Mahadev for his blessings and offer prayers. Amarnath Temple
In Hinduism, Amarnath is a very important cave temple located on the snow covered Himalayas of J&K. During the summer months in which it is open for pilgrims, the Sanctuary at a height of 3,888 metres over sea level shall be considered as a pilgrimage site. The challenging terrain adds to the spiritual journey of thousands of Hindu followers who undertake the pilgrimage to pay homage to Lord Shiva.
Kedarnath Temple
Kedarnath’s Temple stands at an altitude of 3,583 m over the sea floor in the picturesque Himalayas region of Uttarakhand. This ancient temple, as part of Chota Char Dham’s sacred pilgrimage, is open to devotees between April and November. It is surrounded by magnificent mountains that offer a peaceful, holy atmosphere to those who wish to connect with Lord Shiva.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple
Kashi Vishwanath Temple is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and has a reputation for its religious significance on the Western Bank of the Ganges River. According to Hindu mythology, the last breath of those who breathe in this holy city is considered as releasing one from a cycle of birth and death. Temple’s magnificent golden pillars, spires and the iconic Bull Nandi statue are adding to its charm making it a must visit destination for Shiva Devotees.
Lingaraj Temple
Lingaraj Temple is one of the oldest Shiva temples in this region and it’s located at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The temple, designed by King Jajati Keshari of the Somavams dynasty, has been devoted to Harihara, a form of Lord Shiva. It is a major place of worship for the followers of Lord Shiva owing to its historical importance, ornate architecture and references in old Sanskrit texts.
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh is considered to be one of the most important homes of Lord Shiva amongst the 12 Jyotirlingams. Situated on the banks of the Rudra Sagar Lake, the temple attracts devotees seeking the divine blessings of Mahadev. It is believed that the lingam, the main deity, is the source of powerful currents of energy, making it a spiritual destination.
Somnath Temple
There is a special geographical significance of the ancient Somnath temple in Gujarat, as it lies directly between the sea and Antarctica. It’s one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva and revered by followers. The Temple is a testimony to the resilience of faith, even when it has been attacked several times and invaded many times in history. The present structure, which dates back to 1947, is a gallery of beautifully carved images, silver doors and an enormous Nandi idol.
Vaidyanath Dham
Vaidyanath Dham is one of India’s Jyotirling Sites located in the city of Deoghar, Jharkhand. It’s called ‘the Lord as a physician.’ The role of Lord Shiva in healing is represented by that name. As legend has it, Shiva had treated the dead heads of Ravana and was a holy physician. The Temple complex is composed of 22 shrines dedicated to the different deities, and which display ancient artifacts as well as architectural wonders. There is great joy in this holy place for the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri.
