Qatar News Indian Navy: According to a statement from the ministry of external affairs, the eight former Indian Navy members who were in the custody of the Qatar court were freed on Monday. Seven of them had already returned to India. In an official statement, the MEA praised the ex-Indian Navy men’s return home and praised the Qatari court’s decision to free them after they had been given death sentences there.
Official Welcome and Appreciation
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, “The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for the Dahra Global company who were detained in Qatar. Seven out of the eight of them have returned to India. We appreciate the decision by the Amir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and home-coming of these nationals.”
Earlier, following diplomatic negotiations between Qatar and India, the death penalty for the imprisoned Indian Navy veterans was reduced to a longer prison sentence. Following several of the Indians’ relatives’ approaches to the MEA, which guaranteed the use of all diplomatic channels and legal support to bring them back, the imprisonment sentence was also reduced.
Ongoing Plans for Final Veteran’s Return
Seven of the eight former Indian Navy officers being held captive in Qatar have returned home, the MEA stated in a statement. Plans are in place to return the final veteran who has been freed home.
Eight Indian citizens, who had served in the Indian Navy, were detained in Qatar in October 2022 on suspicion of espionage on a submarine programme. The Indian nationals were sentenced to death on unpublished accusations after a Qatari court found them guilty of espionage.
MEA’s Firm Stand
The Ministry of External Affairs declared that they would investigate all legal avenues to have the accusations against the former Indian Navy members withdrawn and described the court’s decision as “deeply shocking.”
A significant advancement in the Dahra Global case occurred last year when, thanks to assistance from the Indian government, a Qatari court mitigated the Indian individuals’ death sentences. The punishment was lowered to jail time.
