Anurag Dhanda on Celebrity Firings, Why Does Bishnoi Network Continue Despite Its Leader Being in Gujarat Jail?

After the shooting at actor Tiger Shroff's car and earlier attacks on Bollywood figures, Anurag Dhanda has questioned how the Bishnoi gang still functions. Its founder has been in Gujarat's Sabarmati prison since 2023.

Gunmen fired at Tiger Shroff’s car in Mumbai. He escaped unhurt, but his driver and an autorickshaw driver were injured. Three suspects were later arrested at Kota railway station in Rajasthan, and police are probing their links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which has reportedly claimed responsibility. The attack follows the firing outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Mumbai home. The gang claimed that one too and called it a “trailer.”

Leader Behind Bars, Gang Still Active

Bishnoi has been lodged in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Central Prison since August 2023. Yet the attacks continue, and that is the question Dhanda has raised.

How the Network Keeps Running

  • Large network: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) says Bishnoi has a gang of about 700 members spread across the country, working with associates such as Goldy Brar.
  • Leaders abroad: Many top operatives live in the US, Canada and Europe. A US indictment named 37 defendants across three groups, and only three were in India.
  • Social media claims: Gang members post claims online soon after each attack, which keeps fear alive and attracts new recruits.
  • Alliances: Bishnoi has reportedly told investigators about links with jailed gangsters in several states.

Jail Security Under Question

A video once appeared that purportedly showed Bishnoi video-calling a Pakistani gangster from his Gujarat jail. The Gujarat government ordered a probe at that time. Incidents like this raise doubts about how tightly the gang leader is isolated.

What Needs to Change

Arresting shooters has not ended the threat, because new recruits keep replacing them. Experts and officials point to the foreign-based leadership as the harder target. Tighter jail controls and faster extraditions are the steps most often suggested.
