Assam CM Himanta Biswa deletes ‘India’ from bio, Congress reminds him ‘make in India,’ ‘Skill India’

Himanta Biswa Sarma

India vs Bharat: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has removed replaced ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ on his Twitter bio after 26 opposition parties chose the name INDIA to brand their united front with the plans to break Bharatiya Janata Party’s winning streak in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Sarma’s bio on Twitter which previously read, “Chief Minister of Assam, India”, has now been changed to “Chief Minister of Assam, Bharat” following the opposition’s announcement.

Assam CM’s Dig at Opposition

Taking a sharp dig at the Opposition alliance’s name India, which stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, Sara claimed that it was Britishers who named the country India. He said that the struggle would be to liberate the country from ‘colonial legacies’.

‘Our civilisation conflict is pivoted around India and Bharat. The British named our country as India. We must strive to free ourselves from colonial legacies. Our forefathers fought for Bharat, and we will continue to work for Bharat,” he said. “BJP for Bharat,” he added.

Congress’ sharp response

Responding to the Assam CM’s comments, the Congress suggested that he reflects the same sentiments as the ‘new mentor’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has named numerous schemes and programs after India.

“Is the Assam CM having a surplus of sour grapes in his mouth? His new mentor, Mr Modi, gave us Skill India, Start-up India and Digital India-all new names for ongoing programmes. He has (PM Modi) asked CMs of different states to work together as ‘Team India’. He even made an appeal to Vote India!” wrote Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Twitter.

“But when 26 political parties call their formation INDIA (Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance), he (Mr Sarma) throws a fit and says the use of India reflects ‘colonial mentality’! He should go tell that to his Boss,” he added.

‘Jeetega Bharat’

The Opposition Parties have added the tagline “Jeetega Bharat” (India will win) to their united front. The tagline was finalised after criticism against the name India.
