Atiq Ahmed: Supreme Court asks why were they paraded to hospital

The Supreme Court will hear after three weeks a petition seeking probe into the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. The petition sought setting up of an independent expert committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to probe the murder of Atiq-Ashraf in the presence of the police.

Report sought from UP government

A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Dipankar Datta also sought a report from the UP government on the police encounter of Ahmed’s son Asad in Jhansi. Asad was killed in an encounter by a Special Task Force (ST) team of the UP Police on 13 April. Two days later, Ateeq Ahmed and Ashraf were shot dead by three men posing as media persons.

Now the matter will be heard after three weeks

The incident took place when he was being taken to a medical college in Prayagraj for a health check-up under police protection. The petition has been filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, a top court lawyer. The petition has sought a probe into 183 encounters in Uttar Pradesh since 2017. Now the matter will be heard after three weeks.

Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur had also filed a letter petition in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI inquiry into the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother under the supervision of the Supreme Court or the High Court. Amitabh Thakur had said in the petition that even though Atiq Ahmed and his brother were criminals, but the manner in which they were killed showed ample possibility of state funding of the incident.
