Despite numerous attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh, little progress has been made to deter or resolve these violent acts. Over the past two days, miscreants vandalised eight idols across three Hindu temples in Mymensingh and Dinajpur districts, as reported by PTI, citing local media. These incidents add to the rising number of attacks on the minority Hindu community in the country.

India’s Concern Over Violence Against Hindus

In response to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha regarding violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh revealed that 2,200 cases of violence against Hindus and other minorities were reported in Bangladesh as of December 8, 2024. Of these, 112 cases were recorded between January and October 2024. Singh emphasized that India has taken serious note of these incidents and communicated its concerns to the Bangladeshi government, urging them to ensure the safety and welfare of minorities.

Arrests Made Following Vandalism

In Mymensingh’s Haluaghat sub-district, two idols at the Bonderpara Temple in Shakuai union were vandalised on Friday. Abul Khair, the Officer-in-Charge of Haluaghat Police Station, confirmed the arrest of Azharul (37) in connection with the incident. "We will produce him in court today," Khair stated. On Thursday, another idol was vandalised at the Polashkanda Kali Temple in the Beeldora union. Police arrested Alal Uddin (27), who confessed to the crime during interrogation.

In Dinajpur’s Birganj sub-district, five idols at the Jharbari Shashan Kali Temple were destroyed earlier in the week. The temple committee president, Janardan Roy, expressed shock, noting such acts were unprecedented in the area. Investigations into this incident are ongoing.

These attacks come in the wake of increased communal violence in Bangladesh following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. India continues to press for stronger action from Dhaka as tensions between the two nations rise over the safety of minorities.
