Beijing defends renaming of Arunachal Pradesh locations as a matter of sovereignty

Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh: A day after India protested China’s renaming of 11 locations in Arunachal Pradesh, China stated that ‘Zangnan’ was part of its territory and that renaming the areas was within its sovereign rights. When asked why Beijing renamed these Arunachal Pradesh locations, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “Zangnan is a Chinese region.”

Ministry revealed the official names of the 11 locations

The Chinese government’s responsible authorities have standardised the names of several portions of Zangnan in compliance with relevant specifications of the State Council’s administration of geographical names. This is a matter of Chinese sovereignty.” China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs approved standardised names for 11 localities in Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers to as “Zangnan, the southern section of Tibet,” on Sunday, in compliance with State Council, China’s cabinet, laws on geographical names. The ministry revealed the official names of the 11 locations on Sunday. Two land areas, two residential areas, five mountain summits, and two rivers were all given names.

Not the first time China has attempted to rename locations

China renamed some localities in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, but India said the state has “always been” and would “always be” an integral part of India. “This is not the first time China has attempted to rename locations in Arunachal Pradesh.” Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, stated in December 2021. “Arunachal Pradesh is part of India, and the people here have nationalistic impulses, no question,” Ninong Erring, an MLA from Arunachal Pradesh, told India Today. “But I’d want to point out that we have ITBP and Army personnel in most of these locations. The areas to the east, in the upper Dibang valley. I’m not sure what kind of policy the Chinese have in naming forests. They are simply attempting to provoke India. It is regrettable.”
