Bharat Jodo Yatra: Heavy snowfall hampers closing ceremony, many opposition leaders to skip the function

Bharat Jodo Yatra: Congress leaders hoisted flag to mark the closing ceremony of the 4000 km long Bharat Jodo Yatra at a stadium in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar today. Top Kashmiri leaders including Jammu & Kashmir National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), spoke at the event amid heavy snowfall. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also addressed the gathering.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will unfurl the national flag at the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters. He will also unveil a Bharat Jodo Yatra memorial. A rally would follow then. While the entire Congress leadership will be present at the rally, many opposition leaders will also attend the rally.

Heavy snowfall closes highway

However, as yatra ends, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed after snowfall. This may prevent many opposition leaders to arrive for the finale of the yatra.

Srinagar airport director Kuldeep Singh Rishi took to Twitter to inform that all flights to Srinagar were delayed because of low visibility and continuous snowfall. Vistara Airlines had cancelled both its flights from Delhi to Srinagar for the day. Moderate to heavy snowfall was recorded in the plains of Kashmir, while the higher reaches experienced heavy to very heavy snowfall.

Reports said 21 opposition parties were invited for the event many of them including Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, and TDP were skipping the function due to security concerns.

Yatra concluded on Sunday

Earlier, the Yatra concluded at Lal Chowk on Sunday with Rahul Gandhi unfurling the national flag.

The parties that confirmed they were attending were — MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Tejashwi Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, CPI(M), CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Kerala Congress, Farooq Abdullah-led Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, Mehbooba Mufti’s Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Shibu Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

The 135-day long Kanyakumari – Kashmir yatra started on September 7 and covered 12 states, and two Union territories.
