India – Canada Relations: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on Friday that Canada had shared “credible allegations” regarding the potential involvement of India’s government in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist “several weeks ago.” Soon enough, on Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked India to collaborate with Canada and ensure “accountability” in the case of the Khalistani terrorist’s killing.
Justin Trudeau’s new remark
India has consistently refuted allegations of having received any intelligence concerning the allegations from Canada prior to Trudeau’s announcement on Monday, when he disclosed them. Meanwhile, Trudeau said, “Canada has shared the credible allegations — that I talked about on Monday — with India. We did that many weeks ago. We are there to work constructively with India and we hope that they engage with us so we can get to the bottom of this very serious manner.”
Trudeau urged India on Thursday to collaborate in the inquiry. Nijjar was sought by India on charges of terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder. He was associated with the Khalistan movement, which seeks an independent Sikh homeland. India responded firmly to Canada‘s actions by reducing its diplomatic personnel and suspending visa services.
USA demands for Accountability
Blinken mentioned that the United States has been in contact with both India, with whom it enjoys improving relations, and Canada, a close ally. He said, “We want to see accountability. And it’s important that the investigation run its course and lead to that result. We would hope that our Indian friends would cooperate with that investigation as well.”
Continuing further, he said, “I think it’s important, more broadly, for the international system that any country that might consider engaging in such acts not do so.”
Nijjar, who was one of India’s most-wanted terrorists and had a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head, was fatally shot by two unidentified attackers outside a gurdwara in Surrey, located in the province of British Columbia, Canada, on June 18.
