In a diplomatic breakthrough, Colombia officially retracted its earlier statement expressing condolences for the loss of lives in Pakistan following India’s anti-terror strikes in Kashmir. The reversal came after a crucial meeting with the Indian all-party parliamentary delegation led by senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
Big Win For India! Shashi Tharoor Convinces Colombia to Retract Statement on Pakistan
Earlier, Tharoor had voiced India’s disappointment over Colombia's reaction. "We were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government," he had said, pointing out that the statement did not reflect the full reality of the situation on the ground. India had launched precision strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control, targeting those responsible for harboring extremist violence.

During a high-level meeting in Bogotá, Colombia’s Vice Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio acknowledged the updated briefings provided by the Indian delegation. She said, “We are very confident that with the explanation that we received today and the detailed information that we now have regarding the real situation, the conflict, and what happened in Kashmir, we can also continue the dialogue with clarity.”
The Indian side presented comprehensive evidence to highlight Pakistan’s role in supporting and shielding terrorist organizations, urging the Colombian government to understand the context of India’s actions. The delegation clarified that India’s operations were targeted anti-terror actions, not aggression against civilians or any particular nation.
The diplomatic effort is being seen as a significant foreign policy win for India. Tharoor, known for his articulate diplomacy, is being credited with presenting India’s position firmly yet respectfully. This development is also a testament to the effectiveness of India’s multilateral diplomacy and the growing international recognition of its security concerns.
This turnaround from Colombia also sends a strong message to other nations that may have rushed to issue statements without fully understanding the geopolitical nuances of the region. It reinforces India’s stance that international support must be directed against terrorism, not inadvertently towards those who enable it.
Meanwhile, Colombian officials have expressed their willingness to work closely with India on issues of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to counter-terrorism and peace-building. Sources within the Indian delegation have hinted that this outcome could pave the way for stronger Indo-Colombian cooperation in trade, security, and cultural exchange.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs is expected to formally acknowledge Colombia’s diplomatic correction in the coming days.
