BJP highlights freebies as allurement to the voters in its response to EC’s response

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded to the Election Commission’s proposal to change the model code of conduct by stating clearly where it stands on the distinction between giveaways and welfareism.

In its response, the party emphasised that welfare is a type of governmental action that guarantees inclusive growth, whereas freebies are intended to entice voters.

“The BJP has suggested that emphasis should be on empowering voters, increasing their capacity, imparting them with skills to raise the country’s human capital,” PTI quoted a party leader involved in drafting the reply as saying.

“The party feels that the political parties should emphasise empowering people/voters and enhance their capacity for their overall development,” the BJP leader added.

The poll panel’s suggestion that political parties submit information about the financial sustainability of the election promises they make in their manifestos received no pushback from the BJP either.

Speaking about providing free homes and food, the party head noted that while residences are a basic need, the distribution of rations only began after the Covid crisis, which resulted in job losses.

Welfare measures can’t be compared to free electricity in the states of Punjab and Delhi, ruled by the AAP, the leader.
