Canada Issues Travel Advisory for Its Citizens Amid Escalation of Tension with India, Says ‘Exercise a High Degree Of Caution’

In the middle of the Khalistani conflict, Canada issued a warning to its nationals in India. Recognise the security issues and strained diplomatic relations

Canada: In light of the current impasse between the two countries over the suspected murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Canadian government on Tuesday issued a warning for its people residing in India. After Justin Trudeau claimed that “agents of the Indian government” were involved in the murder of the Khalistani terrorist, diplomatic relations between India and Canada deteriorated.

Canada’s Detailed Safety Advisory for Its Citizens in India

The warning, which was posted on the government of Canada’s website, exhorted Canadian citizens residing in India to exercise extreme caution. “Exercise a high degree of caution in India due to the threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country,” the advisory read. “There are certain safety and security concerns or the situation could change quickly. Be very cautious at all times, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities,” it added. Suggesting its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to India, the advisory stated, “Your safety and security could be at risk. You should think about your need to travel to this country, territory or region based on family or business requirements, knowledge of or familiarity with the region, and other factors. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving”.The warning also advised Indian residents to “think about leaving the country if it is safe to do so.” The “unpredictable security situation” was cited as a reason why the advise even urged its people to forgo all travel to Jammu and Kashmir. “There is a threat of terrorism, militancy, civil unrest and kidnapping. This advisory excludes travelling to or within the Union Territory of Ladakh” it stated.

India’s Firm Rejection of Trudeau’s Claims and Diplomatic Expulsions

India has categorically rejected Justin Trudeau’s claim that there is a “potential link” between Indian government operatives and the murder of Nijjar, calling it “baseless” and “motivated,” implying that it lacks factual support and might be influenced by hidden intentions or political considerations. An important Indian diplomat, Pavan Kumar Rai, the chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), was expelled from Canada earlier in the day by Melanie Joly, the country’s foreign minister. India responded by expelling Cameron MacKay, the Canadian High Commissioner to India, as a tit-for-tat measure. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) made it clear that the purpose of this action was to express New Delhi’s growing worries over the “interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities.”
