Ceiling Collapse at Andaman Airport Triggers BJP-Congress Verbal Spat

Andaman Airport: On Saturday, a section of a fake ceiling at the brand-new integrated terminal at the Andaman airport collapsed, setting up a verbal exchange between the BJP and Congress. On Monday, Congressman Jairam Ramesh came under fire from Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for saying that part of the airport’s ceiling was swinging. In a tweet, Scindia claimed that the ceiling had been purposefully loosened for CCTV purposes.

Twitter Spat Erupts Between Jairam Ramesh and Jyotiraditya Scindia Over Andaman Airport Ceiling Incident

In his Twitter post, Jairam Ramesh said, “The prime minister will inaugurate anything these days–even if it’s unfinished or substandard infrastructure”, and added several videos and photos of the false ceiling panel swinging in the air. Lashing out at Jairam Ramesh, Scindia said, “Next time, instead of jumping the gun and seeking sensationalism out of nothing, just seek an explanation.” “The structure is outside the terminal building. Besides, a part of the false ceiling had been deliberately loosened for CCTV work. Heavy winds (about 100 km/hr) later, led to the swinging panels as seen in the video. The false ceiling had been restored after completing the work. Next time, instead of jumping the gun and seeking sensationalism out of nothing, just seek an explanation,” Scindia wrote on Twitter.

False Ceiling Loosened for CCTV Works and Alignment

Social media is flooded with videos showing the false ceiling panel dangling in the air. According to the Airport Authority of India, a “false ceiling outside the terminal building was loosened for the adjustment of CCTV works and final alignment.” According to officials speaking to PTI, the artificial ceiling in front of the ticket booth outside the terminal building had been loosened to allow for the final alignment and adjustment of CCTV work. The new integrated terminal at the airport, which has not yet been declared operational, was essentially opened a few days ago by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “It is a minor incident. The installation of CCTV cameras was going on. The wiring for such cameras needs to be done behind the panels and there might be some fixing issues. We have addressed the issue, and the matter has been resolved,” the airport official told PTI. The fake ceiling in front of the ticket counter outside the terminal building has been loosened, according to a statement from the airport authorities, for the final alignment and adjustment of the CCTV works.
