Centre alleges political vendetta behind petition against ED Director’s tenure extension in Supreme Court

Supreme Court

New Delhi: In response to a petition that questioned the tenure extension of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) head, the Indian government has now submitted an affidavit. The Government has defended its choice to extend the term of the ED director and asked the Supreme Court to reject the plea on the grounds that it is politically motivated. The government’s affidavit, according to sources, disputes the assertions stated in the petition and strives to rebut them.

Centre defends the extension

The Indian government defended the tenure extension of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) head in front of the Supreme Court and asked for the petition objecting to the decision to be dismissed. The Center requested that the Supreme Court dismiss the petition because it lacked merit.

The centre also remarked that the petition was, “clearly motivated by an oblique personal interest rather than any public interest litigation.”

The petition opposing the ED director’s tenure extension has been argued by the Center to be in violation of Article 32 of the Constitution. It claims that the plea was submitted on behalf of the Indian National Congress president and other top officials, who are now the subject of an ED investigation and properly qualified to seek statutory remedy from the courts under the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Petition is politically motivated: Centre

Even while there is no legal restriction stopping the parties in question from seeking justice in the relevant courts, the Centre asserts that the petition is politically motivated and intended to further the interests of the petitioners’ political masters. The Center claims that the present Public Interest Lawsuit is meant to obstruct the Enforcement Directorate’s legal investigation of some politically exposed people.

The Indian National Congress Party’s President and a few other elected officials are the subject of an ongoing inquiry, according to the Centre, which claims that the petition opposing the ED director’s tenure extension has as its main goal throwing out the investigation.
