Church asks community to vote against “communal force” in poll-bound Nagaland

The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), the top body of Baptist churches in the vote state, has urged the community to vote against the “communal forces working against Christians in India,” which might be seen as a setback for the BJP.

The letter from the NBCC, which was sent to all churches in Nagaland on Sunday, urged its members to vote wisely in the upcoming Assembly elections for the sake of the state by electing officials who would pay attention to the concerns and needs of the populace. The message said: “Pray that the communal forces working against Christians in India will be brought to justice.”

“Persecution of the churches and Christians in India”, the message issued by NBCC general secretary Reverend Zelhou mentioned.

Political pundits claim that the message of the NBCC is aimed at the National Democratic People’s Party (NDPP) and the BJP, who together form Nagaland’s governing party.

89 percent of the state’s population identifies as Christian

Given that 89 percent of the state’s population identifies as Christian, with Baptists being the most prevalent sect, poll watchers believe the message might potentially hurt the ruling party’s chances in the upcoming Assembly elections (75 per cent).

But, Kuputo Shohe, a BJP spokeswoman, made it clear that the party is not anti-Christian. It’s not tasteful to make such accusations on the party, he said, adding, “During elections, some people bring the issue of religious persecution, but the Nagaland BJP is as Christian as any other members of the community.”
