Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi found guilty of defaming Modi Community, receives two-year prison term in surname defamation case

Rahul Gandhi: Rahul Gandhi, a congressman from Gujarat, was found guilty on Thursday in a criminal defamation case stemming from an alleged statement he made against the Modi surname. The court has given him a two-year prison term. Rahul Gandhi was found guilty in accordance with IPC Section 504. The maximum penalty under this clause is two years in prison.

BJP MLA made the accusation

The accusation was made by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi, who claimed that Rahul Gandhi made the statement, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” Prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the complainant alleged that the divisive statement was uttered during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, and that it defamed the whole Modi community.

Rahul Gandhi supporter posters were put up by the Congress

Rahul Gandhi supporter posters were put up by the Congress on Thursday. As the Congress MP arrived for the court sessions, the posters were set up outside the Surat Court. The posters featured images of Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev and the message, “Let’s go to Surat in support of democracy.”
