Cyclone Hamoon: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday that Cyclone “Hamoon” has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal. The Met Department stated on X (previously Twitter) that the cyclonic storm is expected to continue north-northeastward and make landfall in Bangladesh between Khepupara and Chittagong around Wednesday, October 25, noon.

Fishermen are advised not to enter the Bay of Bengal till October 25 and up to seven states have been placed on rainfall alerts. Odisha, West Bengal, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Assam, and Meghalaya are among the states that are on alert.
Cyclone ‘Hamoon’ Rapidly Intensifies into a Severe Cyclonic Storm, IMD’s Timely Alert
Around six this morning, cyclone “Hamoon” intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, as the weather service tweeted. “Cyclonic Storm ‘Hamoon’ intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over northwest Bay of Bengal,” according to a tweet from the IMD. Cyclone “Hamoon” was still travelling northeast at eighteen kilometres per hour at around three in the morning. It was centred over the northwest and adjacent west central Bay of Bengal, which was roughly 200 km southeast of Paradip, Odisha, and 290 km south-southeast of Digha, West Bengal.
IMD Issues Rainfall Warnings for Multiple States, Urges Fishermen to Stay Away from Bay of Bengal Coasts
Rainfall warnings have been issued by the IMD for today and tomorrow across Manipur, Mizoram, south Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha, and West Bengal. Additionally, fishermen in the Bay of Bengal have received warnings from the Met Department. They have been requested to stay off the coastlines of Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh, and north Myanmar till October 25. They have also been advised not to travel towards the east, west, or north.
Cyclone ‘Tej’ Weakens After Yemen Landfall, IMD Predicts Further Weakening
On Sunday, a different cyclone known as “Tej” that developed over the Arabian Sea intensified into a very powerful storm. The most recent information from the IMD states that “Tej” has crossed the coast of Yemen and weakened into a strong cyclonic storm over the country’s coast. “It is very likely to move further north-westwards and weaken into a cyclonic storm during [the] next 6 hours,” according to the IMD on X.
