Cyclone Mandous: A cyclone is building over the Bay of Bengal, and the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry (Union Territory) have been put on high alert.
The depression is centred over the southeast Bay of Bengal, roughly 900 kilometers southeast of Chennai, according to the Indian Meteorological Department. As the storm approaches, NDRF teams, the army, and the navy have been placed on alert.
“Depression lay centred at 11:30 pm on December 6 over southeast Bay of Bengal, about 840 km east-southeast of Karaikal, and about 900 km southeast of Chennai,” according to the IMD’s most recent advisory.
By this evening, the depression is expected to build into a cyclone storm. By tomorrow morning, it is expected to impact the shores of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh.
The cyclonic storm, dubbed Cyclone Mandous, is likely to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, as well as much of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to IMD, the rain will be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The IMD has issued a red alert for 13 districts in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rain on December 8. As a result, six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been dispatched in Tamil Nadu ahead of December 8. According to ANI, they have been deployed in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Chennai.

Due to the severe rain, three NDRF teams would be deployed in Puducherry and Karaikal
When the cyclone hits the coast, two control rooms and healthcare facilities will be operational.
In the coming days, sea conditions in the Andaman Sea and parts of the Bay of Bengal, as well as coastal locations in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh, will be extremely rough. As a result, the weather service has also urged fisherman not to go out into the sea.
Teams are also on standby for Andhra Pradesh and will be activated as soon as the state government requests them, according to the statement.
Army and naval rescue and relief teams, as well as ships and planes, have been placed on standby. The coast guard has vessels on standby as well.
In reviewing preparedness, Cabinet Secretary Gauba emphasised that state and union territory governments, as well as central agencies, should take preventive and precautionary steps.
“The goal should be to avoid loss of life and to minimise damage to property and infrastructure such as power and telecom, and in the event of damage to this infrastructure, it must be restored as soon as possible,” according to a statement.

Mandous Cyclone
The low-pressure region that originated over the Bay of Bengal on December 5 is expected to proceed west-northwestward, deepen into a cyclonic storm, and approach the southwest Bay of Bengal around the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh shores by December 8 morning.
The United Arab Emirates has called the cyclonic storm Cyclone Mandous, which means “treasure box” in Arabic. It will be the second tropical cyclone to form in the Bay of Bengal following the monsoon season, following Cyclone Sitrang, which hit the Bangladesh coast in October.
