Delhi LG Greenlights Prosecution of Author Arundhati Roy Under UAPA, Details

Arundhati Roy, a novelist, and Dr. Sheikh Shaukat Hussain, a former professor of international law at the Central University of Kashmir, will face charges for their provocative statements. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena approved the prosecution under Section 45 (1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. On October 28, 2010, an FIR was filed against them based on a complaint from Sushil Pandit. Previously, the LG granted consent under Section 196 of the CrPC to prosecute the above-mentioned individuals for acts punishable under Sections 153A/153B and 505 of the IPC in October 2023.

LG Releases Statement to Greenlight Prosecution Against Arundhati Roy

Delhi LG VK Saxena released a statement about the prosecution of author Arundhati Roy. The statement reads, “Delhi LG, VK Saxena has sanctioned the prosecution of Arundhati Roy and former Professor of International Law in Central University of Kashmir, Dr. Sheikh Showkat Hussain, u/s 45 (1) of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in case FIR No. 258/2010 dated 29.11.2010 u/s 124-A/153A/153B/504 and 505 of IPC and 13 UA (P) Act. The FIR in the matter was registered on a complaint made by Sushil Pandit on 28.10.2010. Earlier, the LG had granted sanction u/s 196 of CrPC to prosecute the above accused for commission of offenses punishable under Section 153A/153B and 505 of IPC in October, 2023.”\

Why Roy and Hussain will be prosecuted?

Roy and Hussain had allegedly made provocative speeches at a conference organized under the banner of "Azadi - The Only Way" on 21.10.2010 at LTG Auditorium, Copernicus Marg, New Delhi. The issues discussed and spoken about at the conference propagated the "separation of Kashmir from India". Those who delivered speeches in the conference included Syed Ali Shah Geelani, SAR Geelani (anchor of the Conference and prime accused in the Parliament attack case), Arundhati Roy, Dr. Sheikh Showkat Hussain and Maoist sympathiser Vara Vara Rao.
