Delhi NCR: According to data from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the number of fires caused by stubble burning in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and the NCR (National Capital Region) districts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan has decreased by 31.5 percent this year compared to 2021.

Revelations of data
The total number of stubble fires in these areas this year was 53,792, down from 78,550 last year. This year, Punjab registered 49,922 fires, which is 30% less than the 71,304 recorded in 2021. Haryana has a bigger reduction of roughly 47.60%. (3,661 fires between September 15 and November 30 this year against 6,987 last year). And, with 198 fires this year, Uttar Pradesh’s NCR districts experienced a 21.43 percent decrease from 252 fires last year.

The fire counts are based on data collected by NASA satellites. Sangrur, Bathinda, Moga, Muktsar, and Firozpur responsible for approximately 43% of the total stubble fires in Punjab, out of 23 districts. Sangrur has the highest fire count of 5,916 of these districts. The greatest reduction in fires was seen in Ludhiana, where the figure plummeted by more than half since 2021. This year, there were more fires in Bathinda and Fazilka than last year. In Bathinda, the rise is marginal: 4,592 this year versus 4,481 in 2021.
