DMK leader calls actors-turned-BJP leaders ‘items’, says apologizses later

On Thursday, October 27, the women’s wing secretary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and MP Kanimozhi apologised on Twitter for her party’s spokesperson Saidai Sadiq’s improper comments on women performers who later became BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu. BJP leader Khushbu Sundar tagged Kanimozhi in a Tweet asking if demeaning women was a part of the “new Dravidian Model,” to which the DMK MP Kanimozhi replied.

Kanimozhi Tweeted, “I apologise as a woman and human being for what was said. This can never be tolerated irrespective of whoever did it, the space it was said, or the party they adhere to. And I’m able to openly apologise for this because my leader @mkstalin and my party @arivalayam don’t condone this.”

The tweet was in reply to Tamil actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar, who last year left the Congress and joined the BJP.

“When men abuse women, it just shows what kind of upbringing they have had and the toxic environment they were brought up in. These men insult the womb of a woman. Such men call themselves followers of Kalaignar. Is this new Dravidian model under CM Stalin’s rule?” Khushbu tweeted, tagging Kanimozhi.

The entire situation started after a video of DMK spokesperson Saidai Sadiq calling actor Namitha, Gayathri Raghuram, and Gautami “items” and mocking Khushbu Sundar and three other BJP politicians appeared on social media. The DMK leader was thanking Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for being reelected as the party’s leader a second time during a public meeting organised by party leaders.

Saidai Sadiq made a sexual allusion regarding Khushbu in his speech when discussing the time when she was a DMK member. He was recorded suggesting that in order to gain traction in Tamil Nadu, the saffron party was solely dependent on these “actresses.”

“Khushbu says that lotus will bloom in Tamil Nadu. I say hair will grow back on Amit Shah’s head but the lotus has no chance of blooming in Tamil Nadu,” Sadiq had said.

“What do you think of yourself? Do you all know how many times my brother Ilaya Aruna did Khushbu? I mean he had meetings with her when she was in the DMK. He brought Khushbu around six times for meetings,” Sadiq had further claimed.
