EAM Jaishankar to visit New York this week, to chair two high-level events

As part of India’s UNSC presidency, the external affairs minister S. Jaishankar will travel to York this week to preside over two high-level meetings on counterterrorism and reformed multilateralism, the ministry announced on Monday.

On December 14 and 15, respectively, Jaishankar will preside over high-level ministerial open discussions on the topics of “New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism [NORMS]” and “Global Approach to Counter-Terrorism – Challenges and Way Forward.”

According to the external affairs ministry, these issues have been top objectives for India during its current term on the UNSC.

The UN member states are encouraged to “seriously address the critical need for reforms in the global governance multilateral architecture, including the long-standing reforms of the UN Security Council,” according to the ministry, by participating in the open discussion on reformed multilateralism. Both the president of the UN General Assembly and UN Secretary-General António Guterres will give briefings at the meeting.

India set to conclude two-year stint as a non-permanent member of the UNSC

India is set to conclude a two-year stint as a non-permanent member of the UNSC at the end of this month. It recently convened the “No Money For Terror” ministerial summit in November and organised a special meeting of the Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee in Mumbai and Delhi in October.

The primary objective of the counterterrorism briefing is to “promote consensus among [UN Security Council] members on the broad principles of a global counter-terror architecture, and aim to further build upon the Delhi Declaration,” which was adopted at the special Counter-Terrorism Committee meeting in October.
