Tahawwur Rana, one of the key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is finally being brought to India after years of pursuit. The 26/11 mastermind, who had been in US custody, is expected to arrive on Wednesday following his extradition—marking a significant diplomatic victory for India after a formal request was made in 2019. His extradition had faced legal hurdles in the US, but sustained pressure and consistent efforts by Indian authorities, backed by strong evidence, helped move the process forward. Indian officials view this as a major breakthrough in the global fight against cross-border terrorism. With the arrival of this 26/11 mastermind, India aims to push forward in exposing the larger terror conspiracy.

NIA to Take Over Investigation

Once he lands in India, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take over. Rana will be placed under NIA custody for detailed interrogation related to his role in aiding the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and fellow terrorist David Headley in planning and executing the deadly 2008 attacks. The NIA has been preparing for this moment ever since the extradition request was made. The agency sees this 26/11 mastermind as a crucial link to uncovering deeper layers of the terror plot. Special jail arrangements have been made in both Delhi and Mumbai, as per US guidelines. The extradition process is being closely monitored by NSA Ajit Doval and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The NIA is expected to focus on Rana’s links with Pakistani intelligence operatives and seek new leads in the wider terror conspiracy.

Rana’s Role in the 26/11 Plot

Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian and LeT operative, had not only helped Headley conduct surveillance of Mumbai’s prime targets but had also provided fake documents, financial aid, and logistical support. As a 26/11 mastermind, he operated under the cover of a travel business, which was used to facilitate Headley’s movements. Investigations revealed that Rana helped Headley open a fake immigration office in Mumbai to scout locations without raising suspicion. He also maintained contact with ISI operatives, including Major Iqbal, believed to be another key planner of the attacks. His involvement was crucial in laying the groundwork for the well-coordinated carnage that unfolded over four days in Mumbai.

A Step Forward in India’s Fight Against Terror

With the NIA now preparing to interrogate him, this marks a major step in India’s continued quest for justice in one of the worst terror attacks in its history. Officials believe the 26/11 mastermind’s custodial interrogation could lead to vital disclosures about the international terror network behind 26/11 and the role played by Pakistan’sstate and non-state actors. His extradition also sends a strong message that India will not rest until every individual responsible for the attack is brought to justice. The move is being welcomed by victims' families and national security experts as a long-overdue but critical milestone.
