Farmers Protest: Union Home Ministry Shuts Down Telecom Services in Punjab’s Key Areas

Telecommunication services in Punjab's Shutrana, Khanauri, and Fatehgarh Sahib districts were suspended on February 16 by the Union Home Ministry.

Farmers Protest: On February 16, the Union Home Ministry issued an order suspending telecom services in Punjab‘s Shutrana, Khanauri, and Fatehgarh Sahib. On February 16, the SKM has asked for a Bharat bandh.

Farmers Unite for Bharat Bandh on February 16

A sectoral industrial strike and a Grameen Bharat Bandh have been called for this Friday, February 16, by labourers and farmers. All like-minded farmer associations have been urged by the farmers’ association Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) to unite and take part in the Bharat Bandh on February 16. The protest is scheduled to begin at 6 AM and end at 4 PM.

Farmers’ Representatives Set to Discuss Demands

On February 16, labourers and farmers have called for a sector-specific industrial walkout and the Grameen Bharat Bandh. This request has the support of several artists and public intellectuals who issued a joint statement on Wednesday. A total of 34 people signed the joint declaration, which asks people from all walks of life “to extend all support to this momentous action” of the farmers and the workers.

The representatives of the farmers who are protesting will meet with three Union ministers on Thursday in Chandigarh. Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Arjun Munda, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai will meet with the farmer leaders today at 5 p.m.
