Mumbai to Delhi: CJP Announces Another Protest Date

The October 2 demonstration in Mumbai was billed by CJP as the start of another leg of its campaign against the EC. Dipke said his supporters will be gathering again at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for what the organization has dubbed as “Jantar Mantar 2.0”. On Friday, it was reported that he had said supporters from the entire country would be rushing to the capital if Kumar didn’t resign. The statement coincides with the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar in the capital city of the country, which is spearheading a renewed attention towards national headquarters in the country.

What is behind the resignation demand?

CJP has been raising questions over the manner in which ECP has been managing the electoral rolls, in particular, with regard to the modifications made in the rolls with respect to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.  It has alleged that the names of voters were removed in an illegal manner and has also connected these allegations with its demand for the resignation of Mr Kumar. These are allegations by the CJP and not the findings of any independent probe.  In addition, CJP has made broader demands over election processes for the electoral-roll and criteria for nominating election commissioners.

The Mumbai protest becomes a new turning point

Gyanesh Kumar: The Delhi protest was announced since CJP was scheduled to hold a convention on October 2, at the iconic Shivaji Park in Mumbai.  The media said the demonstration attracted hundreds to thousands. Despite police reports that permission for the protest had not been granted, it still took place. The protest featured slogans and placards demanding Kumar’s resignation. CJP used the Mumbai protest to make it clear that its campaign will not end in Maharashtra.
